Project: Enhanced livelihoods for women groups

in rural communities of southern Belize

Project Overview

The project will improve the health, income and overall well-being of 48 women and their families (approximately 150 people) in 3 communities in southern Belize:

  • Stann Creek district  - Red Bank and Cowpen
  • Toledo district - San Isidro 

It's expected that 228 people will benefit directly from the project and 5.000 indirectly.

Highlights and Updates


Increase women’s knowledge and capacity to: 

  • Understand human development and reproductive health
  • Produce their own food
  • Cook more nutritious meals
  • Run income generating initiatives

Key activities and deliverables

To increase food security:

  • Each women group (6 groups in total)will collectively build and manage a chicken coop and construct a firewood saving stove. 
  • Each group member (48 women in total) will set up / expand. their homegarden with fruit and Moringa trees as well as with several varieties of vegetables. 

To strengthen health and financial stability,  each group will participate in:

  • Lessons with focus in nutrition, food security, hygiene & health.
  • Cooking demonstrations with nutritional ingredients produced by the project and available at the local market.
  • Entrepreneurship workshops on financial literacy, business plan creation and diversification of income generating activities. To expand the reach of the initiative, 30 women external to the project will be invited to attend the workshops.

To raise awareness about the importance of entrepreneurship, food security and the project progress:

  • Communication products will be presented to the general public, via radio and social media.
  • Project presentations and guided visits to  the group's homegardens and coops will be carried out in each participating village.


During project implementation, HPPB will collaborate with:

  • Representatives from Village and Alcalde Councils, Toledo Teachers Credit Union Ltd. 
  • Extension officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Human Development and the Ministry of Health.
  • Personnel from public schools from the Ministry of Education.
  • Among others.
